Still Photography

According to Buddhist philosopher and poet Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, what makes a first-class photographer is the love of people, and what makes for moving photos is the courage to take a step forward. In his foreword to the book Brilliant Light of The Sun, he aptly articulates this spirit.

When asked which is more important – the subject or the art – we find ourselves continually pointing back to Dr. Ikeda’s words. His writings deeply inspire Nitin’s photography, fueling his passion to create meaningful and captivating images.

Who we are

Yamini Upadhye

Yamini is the driving force behind Emerging from the Earth. With years of experience as a producer and editor in Mumbai and New Delhi, she has collaborated with numerous professionals from technical and creative fields in India and abroad.

As a producer, she has an impressive track record with hundreds of FMCG TVCs, award-winning feature films, documentaries, fiction, and non-fiction programming to her credit. In post-production, Yamini’s expertise spans a wide range of formats, including features, shorts, motion graphics, promos, and mastering for Theater, TV, social media, & OTT platforms.

Yamini is also a pioneer in live online streaming, having established on-site capabilities for non-satellite multi-camera broadcasts in 2015. She has set new standards and workflow protocols for simultaneous streaming and web broadcasting.

Together with her partner, cinematographer Nitin Upadhye, she founded Emerging from the Earth Studio in 2017. With complementary skill sets, aligned passions, and a shared commitment to their work, Yamini and Nitin make an invaluable team.

Nitin Upadhye

As a young boy, he wandered the Sahyadris, scaling mountains and forts, wading through rivers and deep forests, often staying away for days. Photography was his calling, and he quickly became recognized as a “gifted” photographer. He pursued his passion in Mumbai, training under some of the country’s most respected photographers before venturing out on his own, seamlessly navigating the worlds of documentary, advertising, fashion, and fine art photography. His work has graced the pages of leading global print brands, earning critical acclaim and even being named among “the world’s best 100” lists.

With the shift from celluloid to digital, he naturally transitioned to motion camera work, collaborating with renowned directors, filmmakers, and content creators worldwide.

When not on a shoot, you’ll find him working alongside farmers, advocating for sustainable farming practices, or traveling to far-flung corners of the world to empower underprivileged youth through visual arts and life-skills workshops.

“I first worked with Nitin in 2013 while shooting a promotional short documentary for the “Whole Planet Foundation”. The schedule was demanding with shoots all over India. We were also working with a skeleton crew. Myself, an intern and Nitin. Every day, I was impressed with Nitin’s positive attitude and commitment to excellence. The end result was fantastic. Nitin’s cinematography was beautiful. I submitted the final production called “Venture to India”, for the national Telly Award competition. Our non-profit budget was very small of a few thousand dollars, yet we competed against million-dollar productions and we won 1st place! This would not have been possible if it were not for Nitin’s exceptional skill. Its is my pleasure to recommend Nitin as a cinematographer. He not only excels in his craft, he is also an exceptional human being. It is rare to find this type of talent, dependability and positive personality in one professional.”

Ahimsa - Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless - Trailer

The film narrates the impact of the Gandhian message of Non Violence worldwide; how it inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in USA, Lech Walesa and the Solidarity Movement in Poland, The Velvet Revolution of Havel, and the Anti- Apartheid and Nelson Mandela. The film premiered in New York and UK in June 2021. It won the The Best Documentary at NYIFF 2021. The film is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ramesh Sharma, featuring title track “Ahimsa” by U2 and A.R Rahman.

Sustainable Development Initiative

We are working with farmers in rural Maharashtra. The idea is to help create a synergy between the best aspects of alternative agriculture like commitment to sustainability & nutrition, the best aspects of natural agriculture such as soil conservation, seed traditions, agroforestry and novel technologies.

We believe that an agricultural revolution, when tied with progressive initiatives around the life of farmers, animal welfare and the environment, can elevate the social and economic health of small-scale farmers in India and around the world.

Befitting the above theme, we are working with womens’ self-help groups and small groups of farmers in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, and have created an online shop for their produce.
